Perennial Flowering Plants

Like their name suggests, perennial flowering plants live more than just one season. They are especially popular among gardeners who want both beauty and convenience because perennials virtually last forever if taken well care of. Most perennials are not only convenient but are simply gorgeous. The choice of highly attractive perennials is enormous and you might soon face difficulties with lack of space for all those beautiful flowers. Like annuals, most perennial flowering plants grow best in rich, fertile soil and sunny areas but there are also many gorgeous perennials that will thrive in poor soil and shady areas as well.

If chosen carefully, perennial flowering plants will delight you with their beautiful flowers from early spring to early winter. Here are some perennial flowering plants every gardener should have in his/her flower garden:

Black-Eyed Susan

Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) is a flowering perennial plant in the family Asteraceae. It is native to North America but grows well in most parts of Europe as well. Black-eyed Susan that produces charming yellow flowers with black center is very easy to grow and do not require any special care except for weeding and occasional watering during hot, summer days though it tolerates drought very well once established. Its flowers also attract many beneficial insects including honey bees.

Echinacea Purpurea

Echinacea purpurea, also known as purple coneflower is another must-have perennial flowering plant. It is best known for it medicinal uses but it is a gorgeous plant that produces beautiful purple flowers that attract a large number of beneficial insects, in first place honey bees and bumblebees. There are several varieties and colors which are an absolute delight in every flower garden. It grows up to 1.5 meter and requires very little care except for weeding. Once established, Echinacea is drought-tolerant and does not need much watering except during hot, summer months. It prefers sunny areas and well-drained soil.

Evergreen Candytuft

Evergreen Candytuft (Iberis sempervirens) is a perennial flowering plant in the family Brassicaceae. It is actually an evergreen sub-shrub that should have a place in every garden. In early spring, it produces hundreds of white flowers that cover the entire plant. Evergreen Candytuft looks best in rock gardens but it is also very effective as ground cover. It prefers well-drained soil and does not require any special care except for pruning after flowering.

Chrysanthemum

Chrysanthemum is a genus of about 30 species in the family Asteraceae. They are highly valued for producing hundreds of daisy-like flowers that cover the entire plant when blooming. They come in many different colors as well as sizes ranging from small, 10 centimeters plants to 1.5 meter tall shrubs. They require lots of direct sunlight and do not grow well in shady areas. Most Chrysanthemums does not require any special care though some are prone to fungal diseases.

Iris

Iris is a genus of over 200 flowering plants in the family Iridaceae. They are one of the most popular ornamental plants throughout Europe because they produce beautiful foliage and even more beautiful flowers that come in virtually all colors. Iris species are extremely undemanding flowers and require virtually no care except for cutting back in the mid-summer. They are most effective if mass planted.

Lavender

Lavender (Lavandula) is a genus of over 30 species in the family Lamiaceae. It is native to the Mediterranean as well Arabia and India. Lavender is a must have perennial flowering plant and grows well in most parts of Europe including regions with continental climate. Some variates may require some protection against winter and for that reason it is important to be very careful when choosing lavender. It loves well-drained soil and sunny areas, and does not require any special care.

Hosta

Hosta refers to a genus of lily-like perennial plants in the family Agavaceae. It is a perfect solution for shady areas because hostas are among the few types of plants that do not tolerate direct sunlight. They are primarily valued for their highly attractive foliage but they also produce very beautiful flowers in the early or late summer, depending on the variety. Hostas are very undemanding but they need more frequent watering than most other ornamental plants.
